Each time a major honors show approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
