Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.
British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
